Living in Haarlem is fabulous if you’re a yoga lover. We’re spoilt for choice with well over 50 different offerings from large yoga studios with multiple styles and levels of classes, to your local gym or individuals teaching in their homes and local community buildings. Yoga has become pretty mainstream these days and is no longer viewed as something confined to the hippy legwarmer-wearing crew sitting around chanting!
Derived from the Sanskrit word “yuji,” meaning yoke or union, yoga is an ancient practice that brings together mind and body. It incorporates breathing exercises, meditation and poses designed to encourage relaxation and reduce stress. Practising yoga is said to come with many benefits for both mental and physical health and can help us parents find a bit of peace and space in our busy lives.
And the best thing is that there are so many styles that there’s something for everyone from kids, to pregnant ladies and even Oma and you don’t need to be flexible or spiritual, just come to class with an open mind and a will to try!
Here are a few of our favourite local tried and tested yoga options, often these are taught in English. Check them out and let us know what you think or even better still – if you have a favourite that we’ve missed, get in touch!
