Understanding the Dutch system

The school system in the Netherlands differs a lot from other countries. To give you guys a general overview of how it is built up, please have a look here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_the_Netherlands

For early child education, there are several diferent opportunities:

Creche: This is a private institution for babies and toddlers, starting from as early as 3 months (I believe, or some even earlier). Great institution for Mama, if she has to get back to work. The creche is quite expensive but you can get it subsidised depending on your income.

Peuterspeelzaal starts from 2,3 years and goes until the child's 4th birthday. Usually, the child would attend the peuterspeelzaal 2-3 times, or later 4 times a week and it takes place in the morning hours only. Personally, I have made a good experience with Les Petits (in Heemstede) but opinions and experiences differ greatly, so please visit different locations and go with your guts and instincts.

Gastouders: These are private individuals, which are registered with the city and look after the kids at home. Often those are prefered by parents, who work longer hours or are interested in a more 'homey' approach.

School starts here when you hit your 4th birthday. Harsh, isn't it? On the actual birthday, your child has the first day of school. School starts around 8.30am until 2:45pm three times a week and two times until 12pm. There are different types of schools, following different educational philosophies

, such as Montessori, Dalton, Pestalozzi, Jena or Steiner. Please inform and educate yourself to find out, what is best for your child. In addition, it is advisable to send out the application approximately 2 years before starting school, to ensure a place.

If you have any questions, please join the discussion and share the knowledege!

Fantastic blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Many thanks! destination

Yet another suggestion…. Again, this one is a tough one to share. We’ve been going for the past month and it’s been FABULOUS. The organisation is called RUIG-HAARLEM. They take your kids for an hour and half and they run around the dunes. Sometimes they swim (arm bands provided for those who need them), they also clean up any rubbish they see. Basically, they get dirty and have heaps of fun. The leaders are young and enthusiastic, masters at ‘hide and seek’ too. Their description: Avontuurlijk spelen in de natuur. Leuk, toch? They’ve got a special summer holiday schedule starting from 9 August. It's 10e a go or a 10 strippenkaart for 90e. Details: Wednesday & Friday Morning Group 1000-1130 (3 & 4 years) Midday Group 1300-1430 (4, 5 & 6 years) Afternoon Group 1530-1700 (7, 8 & 9 years) Thursday Morning Group 1000-1130 (3 & 4 years) They have a limit to the amount of kids they take, so make sure you book early. Email: info@ruig-haarlem.nl (and tell them Belinda from ESP sent you) https://www.facebook.com/ruighaarlem/

In just less than a month the summer holidays are starting. How exciting it used to be as a child to await the vacation and how stressful it can be for parents trying to find something so that the kids are occupied during this long period of time. Here are some links and tipps for you regarding summer camps in and around our area : 1. SPORTSPELKAMPEN, this is a camp with a duration between 1,3 or 5 days and all about sports and games for children of different age groups betwen 5 and 17 years. It is organised in several locations around Haarlem, so make sure that you choose the one closest to you. http://www.sportenspelkampen.com/ 2. SIMBO, is a holiday camp provider, which offers camps/ workshops with a duration of 3,4,5 or 7 days based in Bergen and Bergeijk and is aimed for kids/teenagers of different age groups starting with 6 to 16 years. http://www.simbo.nl/ 3. ENGELSVOORBENGELS, this is an English speaking camp, which became more and more popular over the last years. From the 24th until the 28th of July, they do offer a camp in Heemstede, which is 10 mins south of Haarlem. This is aimed for children between 4 - 11 years. For more information, please check out their website: http://www.summercamp.nl/ 4. MAD SCIENCE CAMP, do you have a little explorer or scientist at home? This organisation offers day activities (until 4pm) with a duration of 4 days in Amsterdam, Hoofdorp, Cruquis and Haarlem itself. It is aimed for kids between 7 and 11 years old. http://magazine.mad-science.nl/kamp2017#!/mad-science-zomerkamp-noord-holland 5. CLUB ADVENTURE, this one is all about being outside, exploring the wilderness. Again, they offer different summer camps for different age groups, ranging from 5 till 16 years. https://www.clubadventure.nl/ 6. FOOTBALL CAMP, this is for the real soccer fan! They offers are with and without sleepovers and are aimed at children between 7 and 18 years of age. According to their website they have trained over 20,000 children in the last 11 years of existence. For more information, please check out the website: http://www.procamp.nl/ 7. LITTLE GYM, this growing chain also offers a summer program and opens it's doors to babies from 4 months until children of 12 years of age. From my understanding they are offering a flat rate for the summer and different modules depending on your demands. Here is more: http://haarlem.thelittlegym.eu/vakantieprogrammas 8. VINEA, offers sailing courses and again different categories for children and young adults between 7 and 19 years. This looks like a lot of fun. https://www.vinea.nl/ Please feel free to comment and post under this article. Can you share some other tipps? Do you have any good or bad experiences with the organisations, I have listed above? Please share your knowledge. Thanks for reading and have a great holiday everyone!
